Each driver is allowed only three gallons per week for nonessential journeys. 1943: March 29 Meat, fat, and cheese join coffee, sugar, and canned goods on the list of products subject to government rationing. 1943: May 1 The federal government takes over the nation’s mines to end a strike by 530,000 miners. In December, the government will also take over the railroads for similar reasons.
